Workshop at North House Folk School: Exploring Woven Structures
Course Overview
If you have ever wanted to explore woven structures beyond plain weave and twill, this is the workshop you’ve been waiting for. This immersive three-day workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate weavers who want to deepen their understanding of woven structures. Students will explore eight diverse woven structures for 4 and 8-harness looms and their applications while building confidence in analyzing, interpreting, and executing weaving patterns from drafts. At the end of the workshop, students will have a collection of fabric swatches to use as a reference library or incorporate into future projects. This workshop is ideal for beginner and intermediate weavers who want to expand their technical skills and build a tangible reference for future designs. Weave structures will include options from waffle weave, honeycomb, overshot, huck lace, log cabin, integrated cell, and more. Students will each thread one loom, and then rotate between the looms to create their samples.

Workshop at North House Folk School: Shadow Weave: Complex Patterns from Simple Structures
Course Overview
Immerse yourself in the exciting geometric play and optical illusion of shadow weave. By utilizing alternating threads of dark and light in the warp and the weft, intricate patterns can be woven in simple structures. These patterns can range from geometric shapes to sweeping curves, and have almost an optical illusion effect due to the “shadows” that are created with the alternating threads. Students will select or design their own pattern, prepare a warp, dress the loom, and weave their own cloth. Previous weaving experience is helpful, but not necessary. Beginners will walk step by step through dressing the loom, while experienced weavers can jump right into sampling. Students will warp a loom and select a shadow weave pattern to create a small sample of experimentation, followed by the creation of four handwoven placemats. A materials fee of $45-65, depending on material choice, will be payable to instructor at class time. Students ages 16+ may register for this course. Students should be able to sit for long durations and manage the physicality of threading a floor loom.

Workshop at Green Door Folk School: Creating a Stitch Journal: The Art of Meditative Stitching
Sometimes described as – “No rules, no projected outcome. A record of days, but not a daily record.” Slow Stitching or stitch journaling is not necessarily about having a plan or creating an item, but it is a meditative approach to stitching. This fiber-based equivalent to journaling or a sketch book is about the process of finding your own quiet, the meditation of the slowness of stitch work, and creating space in your life and your mind to focus for moments in your day. In this workshop you will begin to explore the idea around a personal daily stitching ritual, and practice a small library of basic stitches to get you started. Needles, thread, sewing hoops, and fabric will be provided – or you can bring your own fabric, scrap, or garment to stitch on.
